The Loyola Chemistry Biodiesel Project was initiated in the Fall 2008 semester when chemistry major Hunter Fontenot received a Robert Frank Grant to purchase equipment to generate biodiesel for the Loyola Community. Hunter, Michelle Chatelain, and Brian Hays successfully installed the equipment and began making biodiesel from the Danna Center's waste cooking oil during the Spring 2009 semester. Experiments are underway to sustainably use all by-products of the synthesis, including composting glycerol and manufacturing soap.
Find out more by listening to the group members March 25th radio interview on Science Matters @ Loyola University and a recent article in the Maroon. Loyola chemistry majors who are interested in getting involved are invited to contact Dr. Joelle Underwood for more information.
